West Seattle since 1979ParticipantOne person even posted on a forum that a special tax should be levied on renters if ST3 passes, in addition to the tax that would be levied on the owner of the rental property, which would most likely be passed down to the renters in the form of rent increases.
We pay rents, and probably most landlords raise rents when property taxes are increased, but it seems that some homeowners think we’re somehow getting a free ride, that we don’t deserve to have a say in elections even. That we’ve made bad life choices and are losers. Even if we’ve worked hard all our lives and paid our rents and paid taxes through our rents, and paid other taxes. Why were we considered lesser citizens?

JoBParticipantsome people don’t stop to think things through..
they only see that property owners pay taxes
they don’t see that landlords factor those taxes into their rents..we pay them.. they get the deduction
hardly seems fair, does it?in Oregon they take that into account.
at least they used to..

scottParticipantIt doesn’t happen as much any more, but there used to be a strong anti-renter sentiment here too a few years back.
Those people crack me up. I rent, and that’s because I don’t need to own property to achieve my life goals. I’m well off, do not need or want a house or even the stress of dealing with ownership, have the flexibility to travel all the time which is important to me, and have plenty in the bank to retire at the right time without needing to rely on the property market. They’re just trying to justify their own life decisions by projecting on others and it’s amusing.

BonnieParticipantSometimes I wish I rented. If I wake up on a rainy day and my roof is leaking I could just call the landlord. Or if my roof needs replaced, not my responsibility. Or if our basement floods, sure a PITA but still I call the landlord. Would be lovely. Also, get a job in a different state? You don’t have to fret about selling your house. Many pluses to renting.

JoBParticipantit’s a choice, like any other. if i owned i wouldn’t be limited to growing what i can in pots.. i could trim the tree and till the front yard and grow food to my heart’s content… and i would like that.
it just didn’t work out that way this time.
I would challenge people who have assumptions about who the renters are in their neighborhoods to take a closer look. I can’t speak for every block but on mine i can tell you that the renters take as good care of the property they rented as do the owners.. and in many cases.. better care.
they are also invested in their communities…
We are all residents here.. paying property taxes either directly or indirectly .. for the benefit of the same common good.. and as such we should all have a say in how much is collected and what it is collected for…
