Obama steps up for women!

This was posted by Ken on the “you can still cast your vote for Hillary” (or some paraphrase) thread… which has turned out to be a far more interesting and enlightening conversation than the opening posts would have predicted… but it is too important to be buried in a thread..

The Obama campaign released the following statement today:

Senator Obama understands that the challenges facing women and families in the 21st century are very different than the challenges of the past, but John McCain seems stuck in an outdated view of American families. Senator Obama believes every woman deserves equal pay for equal work. He has a plan to help working women by guaranteeing seven paid sick days to the 22 million who currently have none, and by providing child tax credits, additional after-school programs, and a tax cut for 71 million working women and eliminating capital gains taxes for 8.7 million women who own small businesses or startups.

As long as men get the guaranteed 7 paid sick days and all of the rest of what is listed above then go for it.

Will this proposed policy be gender neutral or only available to females?

I can say without reading Obama’s position that it will be gender neutral. Sadly, these kinds of benefits show up on list of what “candidate/party” will do for women because they’re considered women’s issues. Every place I’ve worked that had parental leave called it that….parental. Now they’re often extended to include other family members, for those of us who have to take care of elderly parents.

ok.. this gender issue was in direct response to McCain’s waffling…

but i don’t care how it came out.

It is one thing among others that can help take Obama from candidate to president.. and that’s a good thing.

and of course… when it comes to law.. if it comes to law.. it will include men.

but it makes me chuckle that every time a “right” is proposed and announced in gender terms.. men immediately want to make sure it isn’t gender specific:)

wouldn’t want you fellas to lose out on anything..

JoB…and that always makes me think of a woman’s right to take a break at work to pump breast milk for their child…gonna stay gender neutral on that, too? lol..after all, we don’t want them to lose out on anything ;-)
