Mail carriers to rally outside Westwood Village Post Office on Sunday

Just got word of a rally outside Westwood Village Post Office on Sunday morning. The National Association of Letter Carriers is starting contract talks and planning rallies outside dozens of post offices Sunday. Our tipster explains, “Our union is beginning negotiations for our next contract with USPS. Our branch for the Seattle area is having our rally at the Westwood post office and would love to see folks out supporting our local mail carriers!” (Here’s what the union says it’s “fighting for.”) The rally will be one of seven in our state and is set for 11 am. It’s been eleven months since a rally outside the same post office, attended by more than 100 people, in opposition to feared privatization of the Postal Service.

Yes, and that would be why they are having the rally on Sunday, so there’s room in the parking lot (which is where they gathered for the rally last year), etc., without impeding anyone other than people headed for the drive-up/ride-up mailbox. The Trenton entrance to the center might be somewhat busier than last year since Total Wine Etc. is now open.

Not too bad. Prioritization of the pace of commerce and 24/7 convenience over quality of life is one of the current problems of American society. They should have Sunday off, and so should you. The postal service actually needs to go the other way, and reduce home delivery to two or three days per week. Tolerance of mail theft, plus availability of electronic means of conducting important transactions, means that mail is less and less used for anything important. Daily delivery is no longer needed or worth the cost to the always-struggling postal service. They could cut the delivery staff by 40% and pay the remaining staff at the levels the union wants.

  In Denmark, physical letters, bills, ads, greeting cards, and other similar types of mail aren’t being delivered at all anymore. Only packages get delivered now. Everything else is electronic. While I don’t forsee the United States reaching the point of being able to make that big of a transition anytime soon, I do believe the time has come to make a shift in mail delivery. Reduce delivery of physical mail to five days a week and increase delivery of packages to seven days a week. The former makes sense as the volume of physical mail is in decline, and is unlikely to ever recover. The latter, while not ideal for postal workers, is necessary to keep up with Amazon, which has reshaped the expectations of consumers to expect package deliveries at all hours of the day, every day of the week.

Rhonda. Lobby your elected officials to increase the USPS budget so they have the ability to hire people and keep their buildings open.

My carrier is consistently reliable, courteous, and attentive. I’ve seen the same care and professionalism from postal workers everywhere I’ve lived, and it has always stood out.

As the National Association of Letter Carriers enters contract negotiations with the United States Postal Service, I want our carriers to know they are seen and valued. Fair pay, safe working conditions, reasonable routes and staffing, and protecting the Postal Service as a public good are not abstract demands. They are what make this level of service possible.

Mail carriers do very demanding work in all conditions, day after day, and they keep our communities connected. I fully support them, and am so grateful for the service they provide.

Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but really, the time of having a dedicated quasi-governmental organization to carry mail is all but gone. E-mail and electronic bill payment systems are SO much more sure and efficient, and if you’re into all that environmentalist malarkey, you save TONS of pollution as well. All I ever get in the mail is advertising and bad news, and that’s by design. I don’t need anyone to schlep sheafs of paper to my door that I’m eventually gonna schlep to the recycling anyway!
