BIZNOTE: Delphinium Delicatessen planned south of Admiral

Another new business location that just turned up in city permit filings this week already has put up signage. Thanks to Stacy for the tip on that; we went by 3902 California SW this afternoon to see the site for forthcoming Delphinium Delicatessen. It’s planned for the space inhabited by West Seattle Tattoo before that business joined the exodus to The Junction. Here’s a closer look at what the signage says:

(If you can’t read the fine print, it promises, “A specialty market with fine groceries and goods.”) On its early-stage website, Delphinium also promises “whole-wheel cheeses.” The site plan shows a kitchen – might that mean prepared food? We have a message out to the proprietor to find out more.

  aa asked a simple, reasonable question, clearly as a potential customer, never once suggesting that the business shouldn’t open. The older I get, the more loved ones I have who experience mobility and access issues (myself included). Disability can happen to anyone at any time, at any age, and improving access to businesses and services benefits everyone.I’m hoping that in the ambiguous context of comment threads, Flounder’s comment was actually intended to express general enthusiasm—“OMG, permits take so long, and I can’t wait for this business to open!!” —and the coincidence of their comment appearing directly below aa’s just resulted in misinterpretation.In any case, I’m super excited to check out Delphinium once it opens! We’re lucky to have great small businesses in our area, and I’m happy to support them.

    I agree with Admiral neighbor. I have been able bodied my whole life. Had an injury and needed surgery on my leg. I’m unable to use my right leg for months- and now am acutely aware of how hard it can be to go places that are not accessible. I was thinking the same thing about this business, as to whether or not I’d be able to visit it easily- because it sounds great! This has been a very eye opening experience for me and one that I will carry with me in the future. I’ll hopefully be more mobile in a few months, but many of our neighbors have to consider accessibility every day of their life, every errand they need to run. Show some compassion! Please keep walkways clear. Do not park or block handicapped parking spaces if you are not designated to be able to use them. Take a second to hold the door open for someone who might benefit from that kindness. Sometimes those little things can make a big difference!

I appreciate the supportive words as this is relatively new to me. Definitely a wake up call to what others experience. I was a customer at a local hair salon for several years and once I was injured I was no longer able to walk up the several sets of stairs to gain access to a similar style house turned business. I asked if they had another entry and options for hair washing as their hair washing stations require stepping up on a block to access and they said they don’t. Many people have more limitations than I do and I hope businesses in these type of buildings can find a way to enable access to all.
